A cigarette is any tobacco rolled and wrapped in paper. It is the most widely used type of tobacco in the United States.

A cigarette’s main addictive component is nicotine. Nicotine actually changes the way your brain works, causing you to crave more and more of it. It works in the same way as heroin or cocaine in that respect.

Tobacco smoke contains a deadly mix of more than 7,000 chemicals. Hundreds of these chemicals are toxic, and about 70 are known to cause cancer. The chemicals also affect nonsmokers, as breathing secondhand smoke has been linked to cancer, heart disease and death.
